Set during the colonization of what is now known as America, a Cy Bellman travels west in search of huge creatures rumored to live in the wilderness. He sees photos of the huge bones that were found, and Cy wants to be known for finding these creatures.
Cy leaves his daughter Bess in the care of his sister, promising to return in two years.
West documents Cy’s journey and Bess’s own struggle with her father’s absence.
Honestly, I really did not like this book.
First off, Cy leaves his 10 year old daughter in the care of her aunt with no protection. Bess’s mother died, and searching for these creatures is Cy’s way of coping with her loss. But to leave his daughter, who needs her is just plain stupid.
Second, Cy’s obsession with these creatures took over his own reason. He travels for over a year and even the native Indians haven’t seen these creatures Cy is searching for. He should have given it up.
West by Carys Davies receives 1 star.
