NaNoWriMo 2018

It’s that time of the year when everyone is gearing up for NaNoWriMo!

For those of you who don’t know, NaNoWriMo stands for National Novel Writing Month. During the whole month of November, participants attempt to write 50,000. It’s a fun way to really get your words down on paper. It’s to challenge yourself and enable to you get your novel started.

I’ve always been a reader growing up, I loved all books and preferred books over people. With that love of books, I’ve always wanted to be a writer.

Being a writer is not that easy. It takes time to get all the words out, develop plot structure and character development, have the perfect prose. It was not something I had time for.

I’m using NaNoWriMo to get a first draft down on paper. Will I publish a book in my life? Not sure. Personally, I’d be satisfied with a book of my own that will never be published. Getting my own story that has been in my head for years out on a draft is good enough for me.

NaNoWriMo’s purpose is just for a first draft. It’s not for a finished novel. My favorite book, The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern, was a NaNoWriMo. BUT it took several drafts for the book to be completely finished. And in the end it was 3xs as long as the NaNoWriMo draft.

I’m looking forward to the challenge and hope I can meet it. I actually do not have anything prepped. I’m going to attempt to ‘Pants’ this one. I have a couple ideas, but I might want to do something fresh. And what I start out with might not be what I finish with.
